Mission and History

FREE Milkweed Seedlings

Join the effort across North America to bring back the Monarchs!

The Monarch and Milkweed Project, supported by the PHCDC, will be giving away free milkweed seedlings at the Penn Hills Community Garden located at 1162 Jefferson Rd on Sunday, June 4 from 1-3 pm.

A total of 22 have helped us plant and grow 1000 milkweed seedlings in peat pots. As always, we are growing 3 types of native perennial milkweed, one for every type of garden.

Butterfly Milkweed: 1-3' high, bright orange flowers, grows best in full sun with good drainage. Does not transplant well so leave it undisturbed once established.

Swamp Milkweed: 3-4' high, pink flowers, grows best in full to part sun in wet or average garden soils. An unattractive name for a beautiful plant!

Common Milkweed: 3-4' high, pink flowers and large seed pods, grows best in full sun with good drainage. It will spread by rhizomes so plant itwhere it has room to spread.
